　　Few artists have created as much controversy or survived it

　　James Rubin is professor of Art History at the State

University of New York at Stony Brook, and is widely known for his

work on nineteenth-century French art. He has published on subjects

from Realism through Post-Impressionism, especially on the artists

Courbet, Manet and the Impressionists.
